Course Overview

This advanced module is designed to help experienced veterinary surgeons and specialists refine their expertise in complex maxillofacial surgical oncology. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, this course aims to:

  • Deepen understanding of the biology, diagnosis, staging, and surgical management of oral, facial, sinus, and orbital tumours in small animals.
  • Provide hands-on experience in performing advanced surgical techniques, including advanced mandibulectomies, maxillectomies, glossectomies, orbitectomies, and complex facial reconstruction.
  • Integrate veterinary dental perspectives with surgical oncology principles to anticipate complications and optimise functional and aesthetic outcomes.
  • Foster an interactive and flexible learning environment, allowing participants to discuss complex cases, troubleshoot challenges, and refine decision-making skills.
  • Ensure immediate clinical applicability by practicing advanced resective and reconstructive techniques on cadavers under close and personalised guidance.
  • Encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing among peers and faculty in a supportive and engaging atmosphere.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the grounds for performing maxillofacial cancer surgery appropriately, through a better knowledge of the biology of main head and neck tumours and the strength and limitations of surgery in their treatment.
  • Navigate patient selection, preoperative planning (including advanced imaging), and intraoperative decision-making in the treatment of maxillofacial tumours.
  • Perform advanced surgical procedures such as total and segmental mandibulectomies, various maxillectomy techniques, glossectomy, rostrectomy, orbital and sinus resections, and advanced facial reconstruction flaps.
  • Anticipate and manage the most common complications associated with major maxillofacial surgery, incorporating principles of dental science and the potential role of oral implants.

This course is highly interactive and tailored to the needs of experienced surgeons and dental specialists, ensuring an advanced, in-depth, and practical learning experience.
