Education and Experience

Lisa Mestrinho graduated in veterinary medicine in Portugal (2003). While working as a veterinary surgeon in several small animal clinics and hospitals, she invested in post graduate studies which lead her to the academia in 2008. Since then, she completed a Master in Oncology, by Oporto University (2010), European Master of Small Animal Veterinary Medicine, in the subject of Dentistry by Université du Luxembourg (2015). Defended her PhD in Veterinary Sciences (clinical specialty), at the University of Lisbon (2016). Became a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry in 2017 and a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2023 and of the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) in 2024. Meanwhile she obtained the Bachelor’s degree in Human Health Sciences by Nova Medical School of Lisbon (2018) and a specialization in High Education Pedagogy (2022). In 2023 she was awarded with the habilitation title by the University of Lisbon.

Georg graduated from the Veterinary University of Vienna in 2006, where he also completed a rotating small animal internship and a three-year ECVS approved residency program in small animal surgery. 2015 Georg moved to UK and worked as a specialist small animal surgeon in international renowned referral centers (Animal Health Trust, Dick White Referrals). In 2018 Georg returned back to Austria where he is CEO and head surgeon of a busy referral centre. Beside his clinical work, Georg has published articles in peer reviewed journals and has lectured and been invited as a speaker at numerous conferences and CPD courses at national and international level.

Teaching Experience

Lisa Mestrinho’s teaching experience was initiated in 2008 at the same time she enrolled her master of science studies at Oporto University. Initially as lecturer in a private veterinary faculty and latter (in 2013) she initiated the Invited Assistant Professor at University of Lisbon at the time she was finishing her PhD studies. She entered the public high education career in 2020 as Assistant Professor but she now holds the position of Associate Professor of the Clinical Department of the Veterinary Faculty – Lisbon University, where she leads the dentistry and oral surgery service of the teaching hospital. At Lisbon University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine she is also member of its research center and associate laboratory (CIISA and AL4AnimalS).

Research

Throughout her career, Lisa Mestrinho has maintained a research focus on direct applicability in a clinical context. She, teamed with co-fellow researchers and students which led to some knowledge advancements in oral diseases under the main thematic lines: chronic oral inflammatory diseases, oral oncology, diseases of the temporomandibular joint and 3D printing applications for oral health. She published several papers in peer review journals, book chapters and a dentistry book in Portuguese language. She is a frequent invited lectured in national and internacional congresses and meetings.

Other

Aiming to improve oral health of all species, Lisa Mestrinho also works as a dentistry and oral surgery consultant in other practices, hospitals and institutions, mentors undergraduate and postgraduate students, professionals and researchers, is actively involved in several scientific and professional societies and provides regular scientific outputs to veterinary professionals and to scientific community.
