Course Overview

This course is designed for veterinarians seeking to enhance their clinical knowledge and practical skills in reptile medicine and surgery. The course provides an in-depth exploration of reptile taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, and husbandry, with a primary focus on snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises commonly encountered in European clinical practice. Participants will gain essential expertise in areas such as nutrition, clinical examination, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia and analgesia, infectious diseases, internal medicine, surgery, and endoscopy. Through lectures, interactive workshops, and case-based discussions, attendees will develop the confidence and competence to manage a wide range of reptilian medical conditions and deliver high-quality care in clinical settings.

Monday, 1 June 2026

1.5 hours – Welcome and introduction Taxonomy, anatomy, physiology: Overview what is a reptile, important background, basis for anamnesis, husbandry

1 hour – Husbandry: Husbandry of reptiles

Coffee break

1 hour – Clinical exam and techniques part 1: Introduction to the clinical exam, sampling, and administration of medication, fluids & nutritional support

0,5 hours – Questions, discussion

Lunch break

4 hours – Clinical exam and techniques part 2:

• Physical restraint of various reptiles
• Venomous reptile handling
• Clinical examination
• Sample collection, including blood
• Administration of medication, various routes
• Nutritional support, oesophageal tube placement

Coffee break – drinks available in between switching of groups

Tuesday, 2 June 2026

2 hours – Basic diagnostic imaging

1 hour – Reproduction: Overview of reproductive strategies in various reptiles, common pathologies and interventions

1 hour – Gastrointestinal tract and liver: Overview of causes of disease, common pathologies and interventions

0,5 hour – Questions and discussion

Lunch break

3,5 hours – Diagnostic imaging: radiography, CT, MRI, ultrasound: Interactive case discussions and practical workshop

Coffee break – drinks available in between switching of groups

1 hour – Urinary tract: Overview of causes of disease, common pathologies and interventions

1 hour – Infectious diseases: Part I bacteria and fungi: Common bacterial and fungal diseases of reptiles, their diagnosis and treatment

0,5 hours – Haematology + Biochemistry: Overview of testing in reptiles, methods, interpretation of results, case discussions

1 hour – Anaesthesia and analgesia: Basic considerations, common protocols, possible problems and interventions

0,5 hour – Questions and discussion

Lunch break

4 hours – Surgery and endoscopy:
• Abdominal surgery in various groups of reptiles
• Plastrotomy
• Ovariectomy
