Course Overview
This course consists of three differentiated teaching blocks. The first block focuses on otitis externa and otitis media-interna. The pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and subtypes, diagnosis [cytology, video-otoscopy, imaging (CT, MRI)], and management of otitis will be discussed in depth. The second block is devoted to the discussion of diseases that affect special anatomical regions, such as claws, anal sacs, paw pads, and periocular skin. These anatomic regions have a different structure and function than the rest of the skin and present specific problems. The third block discusses the dermatological diseases of exotic small mammals (ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats). These species’ main parasitic, infectious, allergic, endocrine, and neoplastic diseases will be discussed.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify primary, secondary, and perpetuating causes of a case of otitis externa.
- Manage cases of otitis externa/media-interna in dogs and cats, including video-otoscopy, myringotomy, and ear flushing techniques.
- Diagnose and adequately treat claw, paw pad, and anal sac diseases in dogs and cats.
- Diagnose and adequately treat the most common skin diseases of ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs.
Topics
Otitis externa (OE) and otitis media-interna (OMI) (I).
Structure and function of the canine and feline ear. Video-otoscopy of a normal ear canal and tympanic membrane of the dog and cat. Pathophysiology of canine OE (predisposing, primary, secondary, and perpetuating factors). Problem-oriented approach to acute OE in dogs (including diagnostic approach to erythematous-ceruminous OE and erosive-ulcerative or purulent OE). Feline otitis externa.
Otitis externa (OE) and otitis media-interna (OMI) (II).
Problem-oriented approach to chronic OE in dogs. Imaging of the ear (indications of CT-scan and MRI). Ear-flushing indications and technique (including myringotomy and sampling for bacterial culture). When do you suspect OM and/or OI?: the neurologist perspective. Medical treatment of chronic OE (including chronic-hyperplastic otitis externa and otitis media). Surgical treatment of OE and/or OM: indications, techniques, and post-surgery complications.
Diseases of claws, anal sacs, and paw pads
Claw diseases. Trauma. Infections. Immune-mediated diseases (symmetric lupoid onychitis, pemphigus).
Diseases of the anal sacs. Anal sac impaction. Anal sac infections-abscesses. Perianal fistulas. Anal sac neoplasia.
Diseases of paw pads. Genetic diseases (paw pad hyperkeratosis), infectious diseases, immune-mediated diseases. Neoplastic diseases.
Dermatologic diseases of ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, and small rodents.
These species’ main parasitic, infectious, allergic, endocrine, and neoplastic diseases will be discussed.
