Management success in cytology & haematology – case oriented approach

In the 5 sessions of this online series, numerous cytology cases will be presented with a clinical approach. Dr. Julie Piccione (Dipl. ACVP), Dr. Paola Cazzini (Dipl. ACVP), Dr. Nic Ilchyshyn (Dipl. ECVCP), Dr. Francisco Conrado (Dipl. ACVP) and Dr. Sarah Jacobson (Resident in Veterinary Clinical Pathology) will share their expertise, so that the participants can use it in their daily practice.

The full series consists of 5 online case discussion sessions, each of 90 minutes. The cases will be released in advance as a PDF or PP and will be interactively discussed in a live format. An open forum will be set up for any questions and discussion for 1 week after each session. Depending on the availability, a few selected cases from the participants will also be discussed. The number of participants is limited to provide optimal interaction.

Uninvited Guests: Infectious Agents in Cytology Specimens

Infectious aetiologies are frequently considered while reviewing inflammatory cytology samples. Some infectious agents such as fungal organisms, algal pathogens, and unusual bacteria can have unique morphologies that may overlap with contaminants, artifacts, or non-infectious processes. In this webinar, we will work through a series of clinical cases involving infectious aetiologies, highlighting the cytologic appearance and diagnostic reasoning.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this webinar, participants will:

-Recognize and differentiate cytologic features of select infectious agents.
-Integrate those cytologic findings with clinical information to guide confirmatory testing or therapeutic intervention.

Speaker: Julie Piccione DVM, MS, DACVP, Texas A&M University, USA

Expect the unexpected: how cytology can redirect a case

Cytology is often used to support a clinical suspicion — one piece of the diagnostic puzzle. Many times it confirms what we expect. Occasionally, however, it completely changes the picture. In this webinar, we will discuss clinical cases where cytology delivered unexpected answers and redirected the diagnostic approach — a reminder that when something “quacks like a duck”, it isn’t always a duck.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this webinar, participants will:

-Recognise ow cytology can challenge initial clinical assumptions
-Integrate cytological findings critically into clinical decision-making.

Speaker: Paola Cazzini DVM, MS, DiplACVP (Clin Path), MRCVS, University of Edinburgh, UK

Flow Cytometry: Elevating Diagnostic Precision in Lymphoma Diagnosis

The integration of cytology and flow cytometry has transformed our ability to achieve confident, minimally invasive diagnoses of lymphoma in dogs and cats. In this advanced webinar, we will begin with a focused review of flow cytometry principles and methodology before moving into complex, real-world cases that challenge conventional interpretation. Through these cases, we will demonstrate how nuanced analysis of flow cytometric data can decisively guide accurate diagnosis, refine clinical decision-making, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this webinar, participants will:

-Gain a deeper, clinically relevant understanding of flow cytometry technology
-Understand the thought process involved in the interpretation of complex flow results
-Apply flow cytometry strategically and appropriately in the diagnostic workup of lymphoma
-Increase confidence in making accurate lymphoma diagnoses in canine and feline patients

Speaker: Nic Ilchyshyn DVM, FRCPath, Dipl.ECVCP, MRCVS, Antech Diagnostics, UK

Inside the Marrow: Diagnostic Bone Marrow Cases in Clinical Practice

Bone marrow evaluation is a critical diagnostic step when peripheral blood findings fail to fully explain a patient’s clinical picture. Interpretation of bone marrow samples requires a structured approach and careful integration of cytologic findings with clinical information, hematologic data, and histologic evaluation of core biopsy specimens. In this webinar, we will work through a series of clinical cases illustrating common diagnostic challenges encountered during bone marrow evaluation in dogs and cats. Particular emphasis will be placed on recognizing cytologic patterns of disease, correlating cytologic findings with core biopsy histology, and understanding how ancillary diagnostics such as PCR-based testing, PARR, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry can refine the final diagnosis.

Learning Outcomes:
After the webinar, participants will be able to:

-Apply a structured approach to the interpretation of bone marrow cytology.
-Recognize key cytologic patterns associated with important marrow disorders.
-Understand the complementary roles of cytology, core biopsy histology, and ancillary diagnostics in bone marrow evaluation.
-Integrate bone marrow findings with clinical and hematologic data to guide diagnostic decision-making

Approach to Liver Cytology: common and uncommon cases

Liver cytology is a useful diagnostic tool in the clinic setting, but its interpretation can be challenging at times. In this discussion, we will learn about liver cytology through real case examples. We will discuss normal vs abnormal findings and correlate these changes with the clinical presentation and other clinicopathologic findings.

Learning outcomes:
After the webinar, participants will be able to:

-Understand a general approach liver cytology
-Recognize common and uncommon cytologic findings and understand their clinical significance.

Speaker: Sarah Jacobson DVM, Resident in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, Texas A&M University (USA)
