In 2003, Marta Santos performed externship (half-year) in Diagnostic Cytology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Milan, under the supervision of Prof. Mario Caniatti and graduated in Veterinary Medicine. In 2016, she performed a research study on cell block techniques at IPO-Porto, a large Portuguese oncology hospital, and graduated in Medicine.

Teaching Experience

Marta Santos has more than 20 years of teaching experience in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine degrees. Currently, teaches different subjects, such as Tissue and Cell Biology, Histology, Diagnostic and Research Morphological Techniques. She had participated in three ERASMUS exchange programs for teaching veterinary cytology in European faculties. She supervised internships in clinical and anatomical pathology and the final thesis of 15 Veterinary Medicine, 2 Master and 1 PhD students. Currently, she is supervising 4 PhD students.
Marta Santos has a long experience on organizing and lecturing veterinary cytology courses in Portugal and she coauthored the first published book on veterinary cytology in Portuguese (Atlas de Citologia Veterinária, Edições Lidel).

Research

Research interests encompass the field of comparative oncopathology and cytology. Authored 65 peer-reviewed papers in those areas.
Currently, Marta Santos is a member of Oncology Research group at the research unit UMIB, University of Porto. Nowadays, the research group is involved in two competitive projects on translational medicine and lung cancer.

Other

Co-responsible for the diagnosis at the Hematology and Cytology Services, of the Laboratory of Histology and Embryology from ICBAS. She also finds time to be an active part of the ERASMUS Coordination of the Mobility programs for the Medicine degree from ICBAS, University of Porto
