Senior Lecturer and Head of Emergency and Critical Care

Education and Experience

Prof. Dr. Katja-Nicole Adamik graduated in veterinary medicine from the Free University of Berlin. She obtained her doctoral degree in Berlin and completed a residency in Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Bern. She is a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) and the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC). Since 2011, she has been a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Emergency and Critical Care Division at the University of Bern, where she is actively involved in clinical work, research, and teaching. Prof. Dr. Adamik is also an experienced speaker and educator in national and international continuing education programs.

Teaching Experience

Prof. Dr. Adamik has been a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Emergency and Critical Care Division at the University of Bern since 2011. She regularly delivers lectures and seminars for veterinary students and has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral theses. She has also been an instructor and course leader for ESAVS for many years, with a strong focus on practical emergency and critical care training for small animals. In addition to her university teaching, she is actively involved in national and international continuing education for veterinarians.

Research

Prof. Dr. Adamik’s research focuses on various aspects of emergency and critical care in small animals, including shock management, fluid therapy, coagulation disorders, and intensive care monitoring. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in the field and has been involved in several research projects, including studies on hemodynamic monitoring, coagulation changes in critically ill patients, and the use of synthetic colloids in veterinary medicine. Prof. Dr. Adamik is an active reviewer for international veterinary journals and serves on research committees supporting scientific advancements in emergency and critical care. Her research aims to improve clinical decision-making and patient outcomes in veterinary intensive care units.

Other

Prof. Dr. Katja-Nicole Adamik is deeply committed to mentoring and training young veterinarians. As the Director of the Small Animal Internship Program at the University of Bern, she has been guiding and supervising interns since 2011. She plays a key role in shaping their clinical and professional development, preparing them for careers in emergency and critical care or other veterinary specialties. Through hands-on training, case discussions, and structured mentorship, she supports young veterinarians in building confidence and competence in a demanding clinical environment
