Neurology III, Berne / Switzerland, 14 - 18 August 2017 Course Fully Booked - Waiting List Open

Principal Course Master: Prof. Dr. Veronika Stein (CH)

The course Neurology III is designed for interested participants who feel comfortable with the interpretation of clinical findings in the neurological examination and the definition of the neuroanatomic localization and wish to broaden their knowledge and level of competency in clinical Neurology. The attendance of the courses Neurology I and Neurology II is not mandatory but participants can profit from the knowledge gained from these courses. It is the aim of Neurology III to develop a logical step-wise approach to common neurological disease conditions and give guidance for a self-reliant work-up of neurological cases. The intensive training is structures as a combination of lectures and interactive presentations as well as case-based oriented learning by work-up of neurological cases in small groups. This approach will enable the attending veterinarian to manage all common diseases of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system seen in daily practice.

Problem oriented approach (POA) in self-reliant work up of neurological cases

• Interpretation of the neurological examination and neuroanatomic localization
- Challenges and common pitfalls – understanding the (patho)physiology behind them

• Interpretation of common techniques for further diagnostics
- Blood work-up: Theory and practical applications
- CSF analysis: Theory and practical applications
- advanced imaging such as myelography, CT and MRI
- Electrodiagnostics
- Biopsies, cytology, histology

• Case-based work-up of the most common neurological presentations of companion animals such as
- Seizures
- Paresis/Plegia/Ataxia
- Vestibular disease
- Cranial nerve deficits
- Neuromuscular disease
- Collapse etc.

The practical sessions include video sessions in small groups. Attendants can train to obtain as much information as possible from the neurological exam and the interpretation of signs for localization of the lesion. The goal is to list differential diagnoses and to make a reasonable plan for the diagnostic workup. Results of further diagnostics are provided and the attendants guided to come to a final diagnosis and treatment plan.
